Art Garden Cycling Program

At Carpenter Art Garden, we believe that habits that are learned in childhood are more likely to stay with the child into adulthood, and that is why we encourage healthy lifestyles in our students.

One of our biggest programs has been the Bike Club! Led by our Bike Shop Coordinator and a team of volunteers, we take Art Garden students out on the Greenline and Hampline twice a week.

Teaching Bicycling Skills and Building Confidence to Ride

Education is a core activity of Carpenter Art Garden. Our bike education program is designed to improve skills, build confidence, and teach bike safety.

There are so many great reasons to ride your bike: It offers fun, freedom and exercise, and it's good for the environment. We want kids and families to ride their bikes as much as possible. Here are a few tips so that you'll be safe while you do so.

The Hard Facts

Properly-fitted helmets can reduce the risk of head injuries by at least 45 percent – yet less than half of children 14 and under usually wear a bike helmet. Anyone participating in CAG cycling program is required to wear a helmet.

Top Tips

  1. Wear a properly-fitted helmet. It is the best way to prevent head injuries and death.

  2. Our cycling program is kept to the Greenline, Hampline, and Houze Park. When you are riding with your children please ride on the sidewalk when you can. If not, ride in the same direction as traffic as far on the right-hand side as possible.

  3. Our cycling program uses hand signals as part of our communication and we follow the rules of the road. We teach our riders to be predictable by making sure they ride in a straight line and don’t swerve between cars.

  4. We encourage wearing bright colors and using bike lights, especially when riding at night and in the morning.

  5. Ride with your children. Stick together until you are comfortable that your kids are ready to ride on their own.
