Stories in Color Lead Teaching Artist (Paid, Contract Position)

Position Summary

The Lead Teaching Artist will design and facilitate a year-long arts-integrated literacy program for K–3 students participating in Stories in Color: Arts + Literacy K–3 After-School Program. The Teaching Artist will lead engaging, hands-on visual arts instruction that supports storytelling, creative writing, literacy development, and self-expression. Working in partnership with Carpenter Art Garden staff, Cornerstone Prep School, and teen apprentices, the Teaching Artist will guide students through the creation of three original five-page illustrated storybooks while fostering confidence, creativity, and a love of reading and writing.

The Lead Teaching Artist serves as the primary instructional leader for the program and is responsible for curriculum implementation, lesson plan creation, classroom management, student assessment, and artistic guidance.

Program Schedule

  • Orientation: Aug 18 & 20

  • Program Runs: August 25, 2026 – May 6, 2027

  • Schedule: Program is held weekly on Tue & Thur; an additional prep day is required.

  • Student Program Hours: 3:30 PM – 5:00 PM

  • Teacher Work Hours: 3:00 PM – 5:30 PM

  • Location: Cornerstone Prep School, Memphis, TN

  • 🎨 Art Club Interns – Assist teaching artists, help plan and lead creative projects

  • 💃 Dance & Movement Interns – Support dance clubs, step/cheer, or movement workshops

  • 🌱 Garden & Sustainability Interns – Work with our Urban Farmer on outdoor education and garden projects

  • ✏️ Teacher Assistant / Education Interns – Provide classroom support, reading buddies, homework help

  • 📸 Social Media & Marketing Interns – Capture daily stories, create digital content, manage outreach

  • 💼 Fund Development & Nonprofit Leadership Interns – Support grant research, donor engagement, and fundraising events

  • 🎭 Special Projects & Events Interns – Assist with planning community events, workshops, and seasonal programs

Timeline & Commitment

  • Rolling / Year-Round

  • Flexible scheduling during school hours or after school

  • Minimum commitment: 2 days per week

Compensation & Benefits

  • Unpaid, but eligible for school credit or service hours

Teen Job Hub

The Teen Job Hub serves youth ages 14–22 and is open to youth from the broader community, while prioritizing Binghampton teenagers and young adults who have participated in Carpenter Art Garden programs as a pathway to continued skill-building and paid employment. Teen Job Hub roles include but are not limited to:

  • Facilities Assistants

  • Garden Assistants

  • Classroom Assistants

  • Art Apprentices
